Policy Brief: The State of STEM

Our first Policy Brief analyses the current gaps in teacher education across Europe and proposes a new vision for integration and mobility.

Approach

Linking STE(A)M learning to real-life contexts through 4 main thematic clusters.

Sustainability

Renewable energy, circular economy, and building a competitive yet sustainable economy.

Digital

New technologies such as AI and 3D printing supporting Europe’s digital autonomy.

Food & Health

Healthy sustainable nutrition (e.g., molecular cuisine) and food provision for all.

Social Challenges

Social cohesion, fairness, migration, and reinforcing democratic participation.

Co-Creation Process

The programme is designed in a joint European co-creation process involving expertise from ITE, CPD, and schools. This ensures continuity and strengthens partnership bounds.

Women in STEM

To tackle the gender gap, we include a specific section on supporting girls. Linking learning to real-life contexts fosters engagement and motivation among female students.

Activities & Mobility

STE(A)M Education Programme

Modular Units

Developed through co-creation involving experts and teachers. Built around STE(A)M experiences tackling real-world challenges.

Competence Development

Competence Development

Partners

A high-capacity interdisciplinary partnership designed to meet our overall objectives. At the European level, the partnership includes seven Initial Teacher Education (ITE) institutions, two European Continuous Professional Development (CPD) institutions, and three schools ensuring day-to-day teaching perspectives.

This consortium strategically unites three established alliances to form a 'hyper-network': the European Schoolnet (EUN), linking Ministries of Education; the ICSE Consortium of Higher Education Institutions; and EduNet, with strong links to policy makers and teachers.

About the Project

The ICSE STE(A)M Vision project is an innovative initiative funded by the European Union. We aim to increase the quality of STE(A)M education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) across Europe by empowering teachers.

To achieve this, a consortium of 12 expert teams from 7 European countries have joined forces, including higher education institutions, ministries of education, and schools.

Our main objectives are:

  • 1. Improving STE(A)M teacher education Designing an effective programme in an interdisciplinary European co-creation process. Teachers will experience STE(A)M teaching as their students are supposed to experience it: starting from a problem and using subject-specific knowledge to solve it.
  • 2. Making European mobility accessible Testing jointly a variety of formats (virtual, blended, physical) to accommodate teachers' workloads and offering micro-credentials.
  • 3. Informing policy: Establishing institutionalised exchange structures (European, regional, in-house) to inform policy makers about the effectivity and transferability of the programme.
